Apple’s Mountain Lion OS 10.8 Lowers Battery Life

It seems like Every time Apple releases a new operating system, battery life seems to drop. This was true for the iPhone OS Version 5, and is now apparently the same for the newest version of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. People are reporting between 30-50% losses in their battery life between charges. According to an article posted by Buster Heine, CultofMac, his buddy Chris Foresman at Ars Technica experienced a 38% decrease in battery capacity on his new Retina MacBook Pro.

Readers of Buster Heine’s post have responded with a variety of comments. Of the 30 comments, most have experienced battery capacity dropping. One user, "Unacoder," reported, "I have the new retina MBP. First act since receiving was to install ML, so I don't have a great comparison, but I can say it isn't lasting very long. After a fresh charge, the battery monitor suggests a 4.5 hour life, but I’m getting more like 2.5 or 3, and that's only using a browser. The tech specs online say up to 7 hours wireless web." Others have reported problems with the battery getting hot, as well as not waking up from sleep mode. Still others have reported other problems. One user reported that OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion is addressing more RAM in his system. He wrote, "The battery life issue is probably due to the fact that Mountain Lion is addressing more RAM. I have 24GB in my iMac and used to have about 20 gigs free when no activity but now I only have 16-18 gigs free with no activity. Mountain lion is using way more RAM that Lion did. More Ram means more electricity. Hence less battery life in a notebook. Just an assumption."

What’s a poor MacBook owner to do? Well you could always buy a spare MacBook battery and keep both charged and switch them out. Or you can just wait for Apple to address the bug and hope they fix it soon. When Apple had problems with the iPhone OS update diminishing battery life, they eventually created a bug fix. Meanwhile, a lot of my friends bought rechargeable cases for their iPhones. You can get a great deal on a Rechargeable Battery Case for iPhone 4S and have your battery life doubled. Too bad they don’t make a similar case for the MacBook.

I had a problem with my Motorola Droid X phone when they updated the Android OS. It wasn’t too long before they updated it again and fixed the bug. With the bugs that come with the OS updates, there are so many complaints that the software developers usually get right on the fixes. We can only hope Apple will be as prompt with their Mountain Lion OS X 10.8 fix.
